Annual Domain Listing Invoice Phishing Scam?

“Should I pay this bill?”….Wait, that is not a bill.  It is marketing materials.

Do not be fooled. There are “Domain Listing Services” that send you what appears to be an annual bill. This deceptive invoice makes recipients believe this is service that they already utilize.

There are a number of ambitious “annual domain listing” companies that send marketing materials which appear like invoices for domain related services.  DO NOT PAY THIS BILL without clearly reviewing this invoice to determine exactly what they are billing you for.  If you take the time to read these letters, it is very clear that they are simply offering you services.  These services appear to be related to being listed in their directory.  So really, it is not a scam, as they do clearly note that they are proposing “ANNUAL domain listing services” and nothing else.  I am sure they may provide great domain listing services on their business directory. However, this is not a required service for your domain or website.

What is a Domain Listing Service?

A domain listing service is  essentially a directory that lists registered domain names. These companies claim to offer exposure and visibility for your website by listing it in their directory, potentially driving more traffic to your site. However, the effectiveness of these services is often questionable and there are better ways to increase your online presence.

What is Phishing

Phishing is a scam (online and offline (by mail)) where fraudsters send fake or deceptive messages to trick people into sharing personal information, in effort to steal money, access sensitive data, or install malware on the victim’s device’s or website hosting package.

Why You Should Be Cautious

One major red flag when receiving these types of marketing materials is the use of language that may confuse or mislead you into thinking it’s an official invoice for an “annual” service you have already agreed to or need for your website. Many companies use clever tactics like using bold and urgent font or even including personal information such as your domain name to make it seem legitimate. Don’t be fooled – these are simply marketing ploys.

Back to the letter, annual invoice which you may have received,  I do view this approach as deceptive. Where as they send new domain and website owners what appears to be an annual bill or invoice using the U.S. Post Office for services domain listing related services.   What makes this somewhat deceptive, is that they are targeting new domain owners that are not really hip to the lingo. These new website owners are often naïve and lack experience in understanding common terms and services related to owning a website.  We must often educate new website owners as to what a domain registrar is, or why website hosting is required.  Most clients quickly grasp these details as we coach them through the process of developing their website.

Over the 20 years we have been in service we have observed that these new domain purchasers are often targeted by self proclaimed SEO experts, fake Google representatives and domain listing companies.

 Tips for Protecting Yourself for Falling for Domain Listing Scams and Phishing Attempts

Educate Yourself!

The two most important things to know is who is your domain registrar and who is your hosting company.  Typically, your domain registrar is the company where you purchased your website’s domain name (i.e. GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) and your hosting company is the one that provides server space for your website to be accessible online.

First and foremost, always make sure to keep a record of your login information for both your domain registrar and hosting company. This includes usernames, passwords, and any other necessary information. Also, it’s important to regularly log in to these accounts to ensure no unauthorized changes have been made.

Be aware of phishing attempts – emails or messages that appear to be from legitimate companies but are actually trying to get access to your account information. These can often look convincing and may ask you for personal or sensitive information. Never provide information to anyone over the phone that you did not call, having first verified that you are of course calling the correct number for that business.

Protecting Your Website and Digital Assets 

If you are not well versed in the world of website development and managing digital assets, be sure to find a local web designer or website development company that you can trust to consult you accordingly.  This does not mean let them take control of your assets and hold you hostage. Google Microsoft Amazon Terminate Employees Artificial Intelligence AIIs the current economic crisis the real reason for tech industries recent reduction in workforces? Yes, the economy is in bad shape. Interest’s rates are high and inflation is climbing, but it is also evident that the recent leaps and bounds made within the developments of Artificial Intelligence (AI), is making it easier for BIG TECH to part with their employees.

Google Cuts 12.5% of Workforce in 2023

First, to put Google cuts in context: in Q3 2021 Alphabet Inc. reported 150,028  total employee’s. On January 20, 2023 Sundar Pichai CEO of Google and Alphabet released a statement “A difficult decision to set us up for the future”. His statement goes on to convey that “We’ve (Google) decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles” (12.5% of their company).  Later in the statement he says that the company is pivoting and recalls Google “to be AI-first years ago led to groundbreaking advances across our businesses and the whole industry.”

Microsoft Cuts 4.5% of Workforce in 2023

Google is not the only tech company who has recently minimized their work force, just 2 days prior to Google’s announcement, CEO of Microsoft Satya Narayana Nadella announced “we are making changes that will result in the reduction of our overall workforce by 10,000 jobs through the end of FY23 Q”. Microsoft reported 222,000 Number of employees in 2022.  He went as far to mention “some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one”.

Template-like Similar Statements by Google and Microsoft

If you review the Google and Microsoft statements, they are very similar in nature, almost template like. The one item which is echoed in both statements, Both Google and Microsoft mention advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai states he is confident in “the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI.”.  Microsoft’s CEO said “the next major wave of computing is being born with advances in AI, as we’re turning the world’s most advanced models into a new computing platform.”

AI, artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. AI is a broad field that encompasses various sub-disciplines, such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics.

The mention of robotics reminds me of another recent major layoff announcement. On January 4, 2023 CEO of Amazon Andy Jassy offered an update on role eliminations. “Between the reductions we made in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles. Several teams are impacted; however, the majority of role eliminations are in our Amazon Stores and PXT organizations.”

While both Google and Microsoft mention AI in their statements, Amazon made no mention to AI in their statement. However, they laid it on thick relative to how bad they felt, and “don’t take these decisions lightly or underestimate how much they might affect the lives of those who are impacted.”.

The Tech Company Severance Template:

Google is providing generous severance packages, “starting at 16 weeks salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting”.

Microsoft employees “will receive a variety of benefits, including above-market severance pay, continuing healthcare coverage for six months”.

Amazon will be “providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.”

While these severance packages sound reasonable, they are a small concession for those who now must find a new job in already suffering employment landscape.

Artificial Intelligence versus Human Labor

The truth is that AI is everywhere. As I stated earlier in this article: AI has is now being used in many broad fields. In fact, artificial intelligence is now commonly used. For an example, AI is now used to author all types of text content. Everything including but not limited to love letters, website blog articles, news articles, and school exam papers.  Imagine all the cause and effects of a world were AI is producing our content?

Google has several research divisions dedicated to AI, such as Google Brain, which focuses on developing deep learning algorithms and building AI systems that can learn from large datasets. Google Research is another division that conducts research in various areas of AI, including computer vision, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning. Google also has several open-source AI projects such as TensorFlow, a machine learning library, and Open Images, a dataset of images with annotations.

Microsoft also has a significant presence in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Microsoft uses AI in its various products and services such as Bing, Cortana, Skype, and LinkedIn. The company’s AI research is focused on developing advanced machine learning algorithms, natural language processing, computer vision, and other AI-related technologies. Microsoft has several divisions dedicated to AI research, such as Microsoft Research, which conducts research in various areas of AI, including computer vision, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning. Microsoft also has several AI-powered products, such as Azure Machine Learning, a cloud-based machine learning platform, and Cognitive Services, a collection of pre-built APIs for natural language processing, computer vision, and other AI tasks. Microsoft also has several open-source AI projects such as the Microsoft AI platform and the Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit.

Saving Money and Looking Forward

The recent position terminations at these BIG TECH Companies are clearly cost-cutting measures that will help them through the current economic downturn amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Ironically, many of these same tech companies benefited initially from the pandemic.  Looking forward, it appears AI will pick up the slack. As we move into the future, it is important to remember that it was the “human touch” that brought these companies to the great heights which they currently enjoy.

In closing, these moves may be painful for the employees affected, but appear to be an unavoidable step in evolution. A step that takes place in a futurist time, where artificial intelligence is now playing a key part in full filling the human void.

Alphabet Inc. announces their intent on “Bringing Google to Chicago’s Thompson Center.”  The company announcement posted on July 27, 2022 under Google’s Company News section, conveyed the company’s plan to purchase the Thompson Center and “support (their) engineering work in Chicago,” in effort to “advance the growth of Google’s partners and customers across the Midwest and nationally”.

While Google, and their parent company “Alphabet Inc.” are both headquartered in the same Mountain View, California corporate complex, known as the “Googleplex.” The Googleplex has been reported to possesses roughly 2 million square feet of office space, the Thompson Center is not far behind with approximately 1.5 million square feet, spread across 17 floors of office and retail space.

If comparing the actual size and scale of the two facilities is not enough to reveal the level of Google’s interest in establishing a more prominent physical position in the Midwest, Google flat out stated that they view “the tech sector’s economic impact in Chicago to be significant.”  While also taking the opportunity to note the company’s already existing commitment and position in Chicago, which was reported in the year 2020 to “support over 4,600 indirect jobs in Illinois, for a total economic impact of $2 billion.”

The two campuses are certainly stark in comparison. Mind you, Google come’s from a place named after a refreshing “mountain view.”  Whereas, the California campus possesses rural walking paths, swimming pools, multiple sand volleyball courts, and eighteen cafeterias with diverse menus.  While this new acquisition exists in a busy and bustling downtown urban area. The purchase of the unrenovated building will cost Google 105 million dollars. It will require a massive renovation to make it the modern and cutting edge complex that Google envisions. However, Google’s company announcement lauded the Thompson Center’s close proximity to Chicago’s “unparalleled public transit system,” while also balancing the statement by saying the move “also helps meet the future needs of a flexible hybrid workforce.”   

The James R. Thompson Center was built in 1985, “the 17-story, all-glass exterior curves and slopes facing its plaza” (as stated on the Illinois Department of Central Management Services website). The building has been awarded the 1986 Distinguished Building Award by the American Institute of Architects (Chicago Chapter). The Center has was called “the Pantheon of Chicago” and was described during the award ceremony, as “a building that makes a strong, powerful, and important statement … and breaks new ground.” It is slightly ironic that the once iconic Thompson Center which was once viewed as a futuristic architectural design (in the 1980’s), will now become a space for Google to develop cutting edge technology.

However, the big announcement seemed to indirectly address many of the unspoken concerns and challenges currently impacting both the State of Illinois, and the City of Chicago. Whereas, many large retailers and companies have been closing locations and/or relocating their stores and corporate headquarters away from the City and the State of Illinois. Each for many of the same reasons, for retailers’: sales are down due to the COVID pandemic, rent is up or just too much to bare, and crime is crazy. “Smash & grab thefts,” car jacking’s and not to mention the frequent and unpredictable violence that plaques the City of Chicago.

Recent companies who have decided to relocate their corporate headquarters out of the City of Chicago and/or State of Illinois include Citadel LLC, Boeing and (Deerfield based) Caterpillar. While retailers like Old Navy, DSW (State Street) and Whole Foods (in Englewood) plus Aldi store on Chicago’s South Side in the city’s Auburn Gresham have also decided to close doors at underperforming locations within the City of Chicago.

While some businesses and brands have experienced disenchantment with the City of Chicago and State of Illinois, other companies like Google, Kellogg and Abbot have increased their commitment and footprint in Chicago.  The Google company announcement cited a recent economic impact study which found “creating one high-tech job generates another 4.4 jobs in the local economy.” 

After listing various philanthropic programs, benefits and enriching resources which Illinois has and will continue to experience, as a result of Google’s operations in our State, the company announcement closes saying, that they “look forward to continuing to be an active part of Chicago’s community for many years to come.” Google states they “love being a part of Chicago’s diverse and vibrant community.”
