Apps, Components, Plugins, and Widgets can extend the functionality of your website. These tools are designed to add new features, enhance user experience, and improve overall website performance. With the vast number of options available, it can be overwhelming to decide which ones to include on your site. In this article, we will explore the differences between apps, widgets, plugins, modules, and components and how they can benefit your website.

As a professional website developer, we take a different approach to managing our clients. We never pretend to be like “the great and powerful Oz” behind the curtain creating magical websites from scratch. As a matter of fact, we often tell our clients exactly how we achieve the objectives that they hire us to accomplish. We take this approach because we realize that clients who embrace their administrative control panels (no matter what platform) are more likely to be successful. This is why we take the time to train our clients how to navigate and use various sections of their website admin section, including how to update articles, pages, posts, apps, widgets, plugins, components and modules.

Before you learn how to update these add-ons. You must first understand the difference. 1st you must understand that their are various website platforms, examples being WordPress, Shopify, and Joomla. Each of these platforms calls their added functions something different.

Shopify uses the following terminology: Shopify content pages are referred to as pages, with a separate blog section where content is referred to as posts.. Shopify add-ons are referred to as apps or applications.

WordPress uses the following terminology: WordPress content pages are referred to as pages, with a separate blog section where content is referred to as posts. WordPress add-ons are referred to as plugins, which can be placed in sections or areas of your website using widgets or page sections.

Joomla uses the following terminology: Joomla content pages are referred to as articles, now constructed in a manner that can be organized and displayed in a blog format. Joomla add-ons are referred to as components and/or modules (with functionality built in). Modules can then be placed in sections or areas of your website using modules.

Widgets are small pieces of code that can be added to any website platform.

AdverGroup Web Design has been developing websites for over 20 years. Website Design Client: The Cookie Joint

Location: Northbrook, IL 60062

The Cookie Joint is an online cookie specialty store who has their local bakery based in Northrbook, they produce Gourmet Cookies and Cookie Fries. They were already successful before working with AdverGroup. As “The Cookie Joint” has been featured on Oprah’s list of favorite things and various nationally syndicated television shows like “Access Hollywood” and “Chopped” a cooking show that appears on the Food Network. However, they were running their website through a platform that was taking 25% commission on all of their sales. They knew it was time to take control of their online sales and time to develop a new eCommerce website that they could control. They learned about AdverGroup through a friend. This fiend works for another local bakery, of which we assisted in the redevelopment of their bakery website. While reviewing our portfolio, they learned that we do more than just eCommerce web design, as we also provide product photography, social media management and more. This led them to realize that we would be the best choice among local web designers, and a great local partner to move forward with managing their website redevelopment and digital marketing needs.

Website Design Deliverables for this online cookie specialty store and local bakery:

Custom Shopify eCommerce Theme Design using the Shopify eCommerce Platform. When designing websites for clients we do not dictate which platform is selected. We evaluate the clients objectives and provide recommendations. Knowing the client had goals to make purchasing gourmet cookie baskets and cookie fries, we new Shopify should be considered. We then examined all the other needs of the project and determined that we were able to deliver all that was required by the projects objectives using Shopify eCommerce platform.
Creation of Client’s eCommerce Product Feed .This client had no pre-existing eCommerce website. All that was provided to us was an excel spreadsheet that provided minimal data relative to their current inventory. We took that information and created a master product feed that possessed all the field headings for data tables as required to formulate a “product feed” that could be imported into the Shopify eCommerce Platform.
Product Options and Variants for eCommerce Bakery Products: Being a bakery, you could imagine the many product options that could be possible with these food products. Custom options implemented in this project were: cake sizes, cake flavors, icing flavors, custom name inscriptions, cello bag wrapping and more. Even more complicating these options needed to be applied to individual products and/or collections and in some cases were required to change the final product price by adding additional costs for options.
Custom Contact Fields in Checkout Process. This client required customers to verify the vehicle fo which they are purchasing rims and tires for. The solution was to add a custom field to the check out process. That way, the sales rep can verify fitment before the very expensive product would be shipped via freight carrier
Tax overrides configured for Shopify eCommerce: Shopify for taxes as part of their PCI compliance configuration and in effort to make configurations easy for clients. But what about when you have a food product that only collects 1.75% rather than the tax percentages forced by Shopify? The solution is to configure custom tax overrides in Shopify.
“Amazon Style” Filter for eCommerce Products: When you have almost 3,000 products in your eCommerce store you need an easy way to navigate through the store. As a local Shopify expert we are have experience configuring your stores inventory properly, ensuring products are tagged intelligently so that your many product types, flavors and product uses are tagged in your products and configured in your filter app to ensure a pleasing user experience for customers who frequent your online store.
Coupons and Discounts: Configured coupons and discounts in the Shopify eCommerce Platform.
Custom Email Notifications to Customers and Administrators: This client required their very custom eCommerce website to provide specific details on their invoices and emails to customers and administrators. We custom coded their eCommerce invoices and email notifications to include all the information relative to their specific: pick-up locations, pick-up date, pick-up time, deliveries, discounts and more.
Content Creation: Website included service page content creation. Meaning that AdverGroup wrote all eCommerce policy text for this bakery website design project. We coded all webpage articles to include proper metadata for search engine optimization for gourmet cookies. Their pre-existing website had a press page which was a single webpage that listed their many notable press. However, we wrote each of these notable press items into their own search optimized articles that could be used on social media to achieve unique clicks, or social media referrals back to their website.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Shopify eCommerce Website: We coded all metadata on their homepage and webpages, we also produced Search Optimized Blog Content and SEO Blog Configuration plus SEO Optimized Content Creation for this gourmet cookie bakery.

In addition to redeveloping this clients website, we also took over management of all of their social media accounts. This included creating and scheduling posts, responding to customer inquiries and reviews, and monitoring social media analytics. Our SEO efforts also extended to their social media presence, as we optimized their profiles with relevant keywords and hashtags. We also used link building strategies by sharing their website content on social media platforms, helping to drive more traffic to their site. To improve conversions on social media, we created eye-catching graphics and visuals that showcased the bakery’s delicious products. This local Toner and Ink Store owner wanted to bring their products to a wider market. While they are already had a successful business that provided managed printer services, they sought a local eCommerce website designer near their business in Elk Grove Village to assist them with this eCommerce web design project.

After meeting with John with AdverGroup, this client realized that they needed more than just a basic web designer, they needed the total package. Website Design Client: Forest Park Bakery

This local bakery owner and donut shop recently bought his second bakery and knew that he needed to rebrand his business. In doing so, he knew that he was going to need a new website for his bakery. He also knew this new website needed to be able sell products and deal with the unique needs of a bakery including prep time requirements, minimum quantity settings per category, and more. When searching for the best bakery website design companies he found AdverGroup and was impressed with the other bakery websites that we had designed. He was also happy to hear that we included professional food photography which would help him in exhibiting his fresh bakery items.

Beyond developing this new bakery website for Forest Park Bakery, we also managed export of their products from their existing POS inventory system, into a data format that we could manipulate and prepare for import into this new eCommerce Bakery website.

“Call for Price” or “Get a Quote” for Shopify eCommerce: This bakery also produces super custom cakes for weddings and all occasions. While they wanted to exhibit these many cake styles on their website, pricing is always custom. So they needed to the ability to designate certain products to show “Call for Price” or “Get a Quote” rather than pricing.
Product date restrictions for Seasonal eCommerce Products: We coded and configured this client’s Shopify store to allow the client to set product availability based on dates. This allowed the client to display products in their store, but making them available only to add to cart between certain dates.
Product Quantity Restrictions: Limits can be set on: Total dollar value in cart, Total number of items in cart, Number of individual items, Number of items for a specific product, Number of items within a group of products, Multiples of items in a product group (ie; 6 bottles in a case) Limits based on customer tag such as wholesale, Total weight of items in the cart.

Carroll Seating Company has been in business since 1952. Their company specializes stadium and auditorium seating. Their website is a valuable tool for their company that serves schools and professional sports teams. Though their website was built to exhibit their services for large installations. They also have a product which they sell to a broader market. Therefore, they needed to add eCommerce to their current website, while still being able to push their marketing straight to various sales channels.

Upon search the web for the best local eCommerce web designer and/or company near Elk Grove Village, they discovered AdverGroup. The client reached us by phone and explained how they wished to achieve eCommerce abilities, and wanted to move ahead of their competition in Google Ads. Website Design Client: Deerfield’s Bakery

This local bakery owner already had an eCommerce website that was built using an older version of the Joomla Web Design Platform and j2 eCommerce component which linked to their POS system. While the website operated “okay”, this store owner wanted to boost their online sales and wanted an eCommerce website software that was easier to use. This bakery owner was already experimenting with Shopify before contacting us. However, after our initial consultation, this new client knew two things. 1) They were on the right path when considering Shopify for their new eCommerce solutions and 2) They knew AdverGroup was the best local website designer for the job.

Custom options implemented in this project were: cake sizes, cake flavors, icing flavors, custom name inscriptions, cello bag wrapping and more. Even more complicating these options needed to be applied to individual products and/or collections and in some cases were required to change the final product price by adding additional costs for options..
Pick-Up Locations Configured for Shopify eCommerce: This local bakery has 2 locations and 95% of their products are for pick-up only. They needed this to be very clear to their shoppers while ensuring a smooth check out process.
UPS Shipping API for eCommerce: While most of this local bakery’s items are for pick-up only, they still have some products which are shippable. Therefore, they needed shipping options set for specific products which would provide accurate shipping rates for their shippable products.
“Call for Price” or “Get a Quote” for Shopify eCommerce: This bakery also produces super custom cakes for weddings and all occasions. While they wanted to exhibit these many cake styles on their website, pricing is always custom. So they needed to the ability to designate certain products to show “Call for Price” or “Get a Quote” rather than pricing.
Product date restrictions for Seasonal eCommerce Products: We coded and configured this client’s Shopify store to allow the client to set product availability based on dates. This allowed the client to display products in their store, but making them available only to add to cart between certain dates.
Product Quantity Restrictions: Limits can be set on: Total dollar value in cart, Total number of items in cart, Number of individual items, Number of items for a specific product, Number of items within a group of products, Multiples of items in a product group (ie; 6 bottles in a case) Limits based on customer tag such as wholesale, Total weight of items in the cart.
Tax overrides configured for Shopify eCommerce: Shopify for taxes as part of their PCI compliance configuration and in effort to make configurations easy for clients. But what about when you have a food product that only collects 1.75% rather than the tax percentages forced by Shopify? The solution is to configure custom tax overrides in Shopify.
“Amazon Style” Filter for eCommerce Products: When you have almost 3,000 products in your eCommerce store you need an easy way to navigate through the store. Product Migration and/or Implementation: Migration of clients pre-existing inventory into the Shopify eCommerce Software. Over 3,000 products!
