Video Tutorial: How to Add Lightbox Image Galleries to Joomla and K2 ArticlesPublished on: Dec 30, 2013   

Step One: Install the Required Plugin and Module

 In order to achieve the functions described in the video you will need to install the two following components:

  1. Articles Anywhere Plugin which is available for download here:http://www.nonumber.nl
  2. Simple Image Gallery Module which is available for download here:http://www.joomshaper.com/joomla-extensions/simple-image-gallery

Both of these components are available on the Joomla Extensions Directory: http://extensions.joomla.org/

Step Two: Format Images for Use on Website

After ensuring that you have the forementioned plugin and module installed in your Joomla CMS, this video tutorial demonstrates how to resize your images for use on your Joomla Website. Many components will automatically resize your images. However it is best to utilize an offline image editor to ensure sizing and quality of images. This video tutorial also demonstrates the use of the Adobe Photoshop Program whcih is available for download and purchase under the Adobe Creative Cloud.  If you do not have a photo editor and seek an opensource solution to image editing then I recommend the use of GIMP. Gimp is a FREE opensource solution to image editing that provides much of the same photo editing capabilities as photoshop.

JOOMLA MEDIA MANAGERStep Three: Upload Images Using the Joomla Media Manager

  1. Navigate to your “media manager” using your Joomla admin menu Content /Media Manager
  2. Create Folder
  3. Upload Images using the Joomla Media Manager

JOOMLA plusStep Four: Create Module 

  1. Navigate to your “module manager” using your Joomla admin menu Extensions/Module Manager
  2. Select the new module button 
  3. Select Simple Image Gallery Module
  4. Configure Image Gallery Module 
    1. Name Module
    2. Select Image Directory
    3. Set Thumbnail Sizing

MODULE ANYWHEREStep Five: Insert Module into Article

  1. Navigate to your “Joomla article manager” or “k2 Article Manager” using your Joomla admin menu 
  2. Insert Simple Image Gallery Module using the Modules Anywhere Function in your article editor.

Step 1: Navigate to the module manager by using the top navigation bar in your Joomla Administrator Section. Once you are in the “Module Manager Section”. You will need to select the correct Image Slider Module that you wish to update (as multiple S5 image sliders can exist and may be assigned to a variety of different articles/menus items).

Step 2:  Once you have selected the module you wish to modify, you can modify the images used in your slider by entering the file path to the image that you have uploaded (** For best results, it is important that you prepare your images to maintain the same dimensions as set in your module settings for module height and width). You can upload images using the Media Manager provided in the Joomla CMS or you can upload images via FTP.  Within the S5 Module, you will enter the image file path in the blank form area titled “Image Location URL”.  An example of a file path is  /images/GALLERY/Home1.jpg

The S5 Image and Content Fader allows for up to 10 images to be utilized. Be sure to update the images to reflect the order you wish them to be reflected on the front end. If you wish this image to link to a specific page then enter the URL in the blank form area titled “Image Hyperlink URL”.

Save your module and verify the front end to make sure you placed the correct image path.

Basic Option:  Basic setting such as module height, width and image delay time can be revised by clicking on the Basic Options tab on the right side of the module screen. Here you can select other tools that can be enabled. Tools such as picture carousel, navigation arrows and slide text can be enabled or disabled here. If you opt to have “slide text” enabled, then be sure to enter in the slide text in the areas that provide blank form entries for Title1 -10.

The image fader is powered by Shape5 S5 Effects. This means you will not receive any conflicts with other javascript libraries, your template, modules or components you might be using. This module now includes an image reflection that can be enabled or disabled if you experience conflicts with Mootools.

So what exactly is Lightbox? Lightbox is a JavaScript technique used to display large images. The effect has gained widespread popularity due to its simple yet elegant style and easy implementation.

In order to achieve Lightbox function ability for Joomla Article Images you must first have the following components and plugins installed prior to proceeding:

 Steps to achieve Lightbox Image function ability in Joomla Articles.

  1. Download the the most current JCE Editor and RockeTTheme Rokbox Plugin.
  2. Enable them in the Plugin Manger in the Joomla admin area. Settings for how the lightbox is displayed are set with the plugin in the plugin manger for Joomla, not in any of the JCE settings. This is one advantage of using this system is it gives some control over how your lightbox is displayed.
  3. In the JCE editor, insert or edit the image using the extended image tool. After inserting the small image in your article or module, upload the larger image using the upload dialog or FTP program.
  4. Click the pop-up tab and select RoxBox as the Compatibility mode. Type in the URL for the larger image you uploaded and type a caption if you want to. Make sure to check the enable check box before clicking the update button at the bottom of the page.

The above directives will result in a nice animated light box with a soft drop shadow around the lightbox.

It is also possible to group images with in an article, so that when the lightbox is opened the remaining articles in the image will appear. For example “Image 1 of 5”.
